Imagine that the Beatles split up to enlist in the military when their popularity was at its peak.

This is the current situation of the members of the world's largest pop band, BTS.

On the 12th, lead vocalist Jungkook (26) also enlisted, making all seven BTS members begin military service. In Korea, any healthy male between the ages of 18 and 28 is required to serve in the military.

Just four weeks ago, Jungkook reached the peak of his crossover solo album career in New York, USA.

Not only did he surprise Jimmy Fallon, the host of ‘The Tonight Show’, with his witty Michael Jackson-style singing and dancing, but the next night he met the public for the last time with a surprise performance on the rooftop of a building in Times Square. The scene on this day, including the sight of citizens shouting and cheering, became a hot topic on ‘Tik Tok.’

In addition, Jungkook has released collaborations with famous artists such as Justin Timberlake and Usher over the past few weeks. Not only did his solo debut album 'Golden' take first place on various charts, but the album's b-side song 'Standing Next to You' became very popular on TikTok.

Although his popularity was soaring, Jungkook stopped everything and returned to Korea.

A few days later, Jungkook and three other BTS members started a live broadcast while eating pizza together. They then told their fans that it was time for them to enlist in the military, just like the other three members.

Fans' attention was focused on the members' hairstyles. This is because the fluffy, curly hair of K-pop stars will disappear, and instead, they will appear with ‘egg hair,’ that is, the same black hair that all soldiers have.

Meanwhile, South Korea is technically still at war with North Korea, and most men are required to serve in the military for 18 months.

However, since BTS is by far Korea's most famous cultural product, the debate over whether they should also enlist has continued for a long time.

Olympic medalists and winners of famous classical music competitions already have special military service benefits. Accordingly, in 2020, the Korean National Assembly amended the law to allow outstanding performers in the field of pop culture and arts, such as BTS members, to postpone military enlistment until the age of 30.

재치 넘치는 마이클 잭슨 스타일 노래와 춤으로 ‘더 투나잇 쇼’의 진행자 지미 팰런을 깜짝 놀라게 했을 뿐만 아니라, 그다음 날 밤엔 타임스퀘어의 한 건물 옥상에서 깜짝 공연을 선보이며 마지막으로 대중을 만났다. 소리를 지르며 환호하는 시민들의 모습 등 이날 현장은 ‘틱톡’에서 큰 화제가 됐다.

게다가 정국은 지난 몇 주간 저스틴 팀버레이크, 어셔 등 유명 아티스트와의 협업 작품을 발표하기도 했으며, 솔로 데뷔 앨범 ‘골든’은 각종 차트에서 1위를 차지했을 뿐만 아니라, 해당 앨범의 수록곡 ‘Standing Next to You’는 틱톡에서 큰 인기를 끌었다.

이렇듯 인기가 치솟고 있었으나, 정국은 모든 걸 멈추고 다시 한국으로 돌아갔다.

며칠 후, 정국과 다른 BTS 멤버 3명은 다 함께 피자를 먹으며 생방송을 시작했다. 그리곤 팬들에게 다른 멤버 3명처럼 자신들도 군대에 갈 때가 됐다고 말했다.

팬들의 관심은 멤버들의 헤어스타일에 쏠렸다. 케이팝 스타들의 푹신푹신한 곱슬머리는 사라지고 대신 ‘계란머리’ 즉, 모든 군인들이 똑같이 하는 까까머리로 등장할 예정이기 때문이다.

한편 한국은 엄밀히 말하면 여전히 북한과 전쟁 중인 국가로, 대부분 남성은 18개월간 군에서 복무해야 한다.

그러나 단연 한국의 가장 유명한 문화 상품인 BTS이기에, 이들 또한 입대해야 하는지에 대한 논쟁이 오랫동안 이어졌다.

이미 올림픽 메달리스트와 유명 클래식 음악 대회 수상자에겐 병역 특례 혜택이 있었다. 이에 2020년, 한국 국회는 BTS 멤버와 같은 대중문화예술 분야 우수자들이 만 30세까지 군대 입영을 연기할 수 있도록 법을 개정했다.

At the time, some political circles argued that Korea's most famous pop star, BTS, had already completed their service to the country as they had earned billions of dollars in foreign currency, and that they should be allowed to continue working as superstars.

However, in October, ‘Big Hit Music’ under BTS’s agency ‘Hive’ announced that all seven members would fulfill their military service obligations.

And Jin, the oldest member, announced the beginning by enlisting in December 2022.

BTS' group activities are expected to take a break to gain time for military service and each member's projects.

Grace Kao, a professor at Yale University and a K-pop scholar, explained, “For Western fans, it feels very cruel to be forced to stop activities at the peak of their career, whether they like it or not, and go on a break.”

However, Professor Kao added that this is a situation most Koreans are familiar with. In fact, before BTS, many other Korean singers and actors stopped their activities and enlisted.

And since the members had already announced their intention to enlist, fans around the world had made up their minds to accept this news, so Professor Kao explained that “it was not surprising news.”

Nevertheless, on the actual enlistment day, fans had to feel complex emotions. Ahead of the members' enlistment, fans around the world this week wrote touching tributes in various languages, from Spanish to Vietnamese.

RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook were revealed to be entering training camp on the 11th and 12th, respectively, and social media was flooded with crying emoticons.

“All the members disappeared at once,” one fan wrote on TikTok. “My heart breaks so much. Oh my god, I can't hold on any longer. “I will truly miss you,” he wrote.

BTS fans, also known by the fandom name ‘ARMY’, are considered one of the most actively participating fandoms on social media in recent years.

Professor Jimin Park, a Malaysia-based K-pop expert, explained in an interview with the BBC that many fans may be experiencing brief bouts of “depression.”

그러나 지난 10월 BTS의 소속사인 ‘하이브’ 산하 ‘빅히트 뮤직’은 멤버 7인 전원은 자신들의 병역 의무를 다할 것이라고 밝혔다.

그리고 가장 나이가 많은 멤버 진이 지난 2022년 12월 입대하며 그 시작을 알렸다.

BTS의 단체 활동은 군 복무 및 멤버 각자의 프로젝트를 이루기 위한 시간을 벌고자 휴식기에 들어갈 것으로 보인다.

미 예일대 교수이자 케이팝 학자인 그레이스 카오는 “서양 팬들에게 커리어 정점에서 싫든 좋든 간에 활동을 멈추고 강제로 휴식기에 들어가야 하는 모습은 매우 잔인하게 느껴진다”라고 설명했다.

그러나 카오 교수는 한국인들에겐 대부분 익숙한 상황이라고 덧붙였다. 실제로 BTS 이전 많은 다른 한국의 가수 및 배우들이 활동을 중단하고 입대했다.

그리고 이미 멤버들이 입대 의사를 밝힌 이후 전 세계 팬들은 이 소식을 받아들이고자 마음을 다잡고 있었기에 “깜짝 놀랄 소식은 아니었다”는 게 카오 교수의 설명이다.

그럼에도 실제 입대날 팬들은 복잡한 감정을 느껴야만 했다. 멤버들의 입대를 앞두고 이번주 전 세계 팬들은 스페인어부터 베트남어에 이르기까지 다양한 언어로 감동적인 헌사를 써 내려갔다.

RM, 뷔, 지민, 정국이 각각 11일과 12일 훈련소에 들어가는 모습이 공개되며 SNS엔 우는 이모티콘이 넘쳐났다.

한 팬은 틱톡에 “멤버가 한꺼번에 모두 사라졌다”면서 “내 심장이 너무 아프다. 세상에, 더는 버틸 수 없다. 정말 그리울 것”이라고 적었다.

‘아미(ARMY)’라는 팬덤명으로도 잘 알려진 방탄소년단의 팬들은 최근 몇 년간 SNS에서 가장 적극적으로 참여하는 팬덤으로 손꼽히는 집단이다.

말레이시아 기반의 케이팝 전문가인 지민 팍 교수는 BBC와의 인터뷰에서 많은 팬들이 짧게나마 “우울증”을 경험하고 있을지도 모른다고 설명했다.

Meanwhile, on the 11th and 12th, BTS' song 'Spring Day', which was released six years ago and was less well-known than recent songs, suddenly rose to first place on the US iTunes chart.

One fan wrote on the sub-forum of BTS’ Reddit account, which has 610,000 participants, “There are no members, but ARMYs are putting BTS’ music on the charts… “I am always grateful for the love shown by our fandom,” he wrote.

These fans' attitudes and reactions remind me of the wives and women who had to send their husbands and lovers to war during World War II. Many BTS fans have already said that they will wait for the members and will dedicate themselves unconditionally.

And industry insiders said that if the world's largest fandom can show this level of dedication, BTS will likely maintain its current status.

Jeff Benjamin, a K-pop columnist and writer for Billboard Magazine, said, “Generally speaking, in any country in the world, when an artist group goes on a break, it affects their popularity,” adding, “But I dare say there are those who can resist this formula. “If there is, it would be BTS.”

And the core management strategy for this is the stable supply of content.

Benjamin said, “There are songs, videos, photos, and messages for fans that the members prepared in advance before enlisting. “These things are very important for fans to maintain their support,” he explained.

Meanwhile, with BTS away, other K-pop artists got their own opportunities. Several groups have already appeared on Western mainstream music charts. Listeners are paying attention to K-pop groups such as New Jeans and Le Seraphim.

Professor Park said, “The media has focused only on BTS,” and added, “Now that BTS is on a break, other K-pop groups will also be able to receive attention. “If you look at the K-pop industry as a whole, this is a win-win situation,” he concluded.

 

한편 11일과 12일, 6년 전 발표된 곡이자 최근 곡에 비해 덜 알려져 있던 BTS의 곡 ‘봄날’이 갑자기 미국 아이튠즈 차트에서 1위로 올라섰다.

한 팬은 61만 명이 참여하는 BTS의 ‘레딧’ 계정 서브 포럼에 “멤버들은 없지만 아미들은 BTS의 음악을 차트에 올리고 있다 … 우리 팬덤이 보여주는 사랑에 늘 감사하다”라고 적었다.

이러한 팬들의 태도와 반응은 지난 제2차 세계대전 당시 남편과 연인을 전쟁에 보내야만 했던 아내와 여성들을 떠올리게 한다. 많은 BTS 팬들은 이미 멤버들을 기다리겠다며 무조건 헌신하겠다고 말한다.

그리고 업계 관계자들은 세계에서 가장 규모가 큰 팬덤에서 이 정도로 헌신할 수 있다면 아마도 BTS는 현 위상을 유지할 가능성이 크다고 말했다.

‘빌보드 매거진’의 케이팝 칼럼니스트이자 작가인 제프 벤자민은 “일반적으로 전 세계 어느 국가이든, 아티스트 그룹이 휴식기에 들어간다면 인기에 영향을 미친다”면서 “그러나 감히 말해보건대, 이러한 공식에 저항할 수 있는 이들이 있다면, 그건 바로 BTS일 것”이라고 말했다.

그리고 이를 위한 매니지먼트의 핵심 전략은 콘텐츠의 안정적인 공급이다.

벤자민은 “멤버들이 입대 전 미리 준비해 둔 곡, 영상, 사진, 팬들을 위한 메시지 등이 준비돼 있다. 팬들이 지지를 유지하기 위해선 이런 것들이 매우 중요하다”라고 설명했다.

한편 BTS가 자리를 비우면서 다른 케이팝 아티스트들은 나름의 기회를 얻게 됐다. 이미 몇몇 그룹들은 서구 주류 음악 차트에 등장했다. 리스너들은 뉴진스, 르세라핌과 같은 케이팝 그룹에 주목하고 있다.

팍 교수는 “언론 매체는 BTS만을 크게 집중했다”면서 “이제 BTS가 휴식기에 들어가게 되면서 다른 케이팝 그룹들도 주목받을 수 있게 될 것이다. 케이팝 산업 전체적으로 보면 이는 윈-윈 상황”이라고 마무리했다.

 

개인적인 짧은 소견

 

BTS는 그들의 노력과 열정으로 세계적인 스타로 스스로 자리를 차지한 대한민국의 자랑스러운 젊은 청년들이다.  그들이 한민족들이 분단된 이 조국에 태어난  것이 조금의 불행이긴 하지만  그런 요소들을 그 자신들은 전혀 신경 쓰지 않으며 자신들이 저야 할 병역의무를 스스로 지켜야 한다고 수차례 주장하며 스스로의 의무를 다하는 모습을 스스로 보여주고 있는데 이들의 병역문제를 정치권 몇몇이 자신들의 정치 이익을 위해 이용하는 정말 후안무치한 일에 희생양이 된 것이 BTS 병역논란의 핵심이 아닌가 한다.  

 

그들 노력과 열정으로 만든 BTS란 그 자체를 전혀 관련도 없고 논할 자격도 되지 않는 후안무치한 자들이 더 이상 입에 담지 않았으면 한다.  그 보도 첫 문장에서 처럼 비틀스가 인기 최고조에 달 했을 때 갑작스레 군대라는 곳에 간다는 소식을 접한다면 어떻겠냐는듯한 질문을 던졌다.  글쓴이는 이 문장에 답으로 이렇게 답해 드리고자 한다.

 

비틀스의 국가는 분단국가가 아니었다.  그리고 한 민족이 분단된 상태에서 서로서로를 경계하고 항상 전쟁의 위협인 상태로 삶을 이어가는 것이 전혀 다른 전재이다라고 말하고 싶다.
